Who's side are you on

Ok, If I've blogged about part of this forgive me.
Isaiah has really been assigning things to this side of the family or that.
Isaiah you didn't flush the toilet- "Sorry mom I get that from Dad's side of the family".
Isaiah you didn't shut the gate- "Sorry mom I get that from Papaw's side of the family".
Naomi passes gas very loudly- "OOOOOOHHHH she takes after Dad!"
Isaiah wash your hands- "That's from Grammie!"
When we go to some one's home and they're not home Isaiah puts a broom across the door or moves the trash can in front of the door "Just to let them know someone was here. That comes from the Sayler side". It really does though! This year he's met family members he never really knew before. They are cousin's to my Grandma Naomi who's maiden name was Sayler and guess what! They do that too! The 73 yr old Grandpa Sayler thinks it's hilarious and his son thinks it eerie that Isaiah just seems to do that without being shown or told that it's "a Sayler thing".
About not flushing being from my husband's side of the family.. Funny thing is my Dad's sister said she's pretty sure it's from their side of the family since they never flushed a toilet when they were growing up. They had an outhouse and it was built over a creek so the creek just carried it down stream. My Dad thought his Grandparents were rich because their outhouse had a cement floor.
Isaiah once asked "If Dad is a hillbilly and you are half hillbilly. What does that make me."
I responded "A Buckeye!" Which he thought was hilarious!

Social Studies

What kind of kid brings home his Social Studies book, even when there's no homework, just so he can read it?
What kind of kid takes their Social Studies book along in the car so they can read on the way to the restaurant?
My kid!
It's the heaviest book he has! It weighs down his back pack. It is at least 2 inches thick. The boy just loves Social Studies!

Tooth Fairy

Isaiah is 10 and lost a big tooth. It bled like crazy! He immediately said "Dad! Stick it under my bed!" (meaning pillow!). Bill said " Son, remember what we told you about Santa and the Easter Bunny? Who do you think is the Tooth Fairy?"
Isaiah says "Sissy? Papaw? OOO I'd love to see Papaw in a pink tutu and tiara! Let me guess Dad, you're just gonna give me money. Right?"
Bill gave him $5.
This happened on Saturday. The same day my Dad was picking Isaiah up to spend the night and go see Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. Which they really liked.
Sunday evening Isaiah was unpacking his bag from his overnight stay and flashed me a wad of bills.
"Where did you get that money?" I asked
"From Papaw and Grammy." He says
"How much did they give you?" I ask
" $15" he tells me.
"Is there a gold filling in it? What are you doing "shopping" your tooth around?" I say.
Later I call my dad and say "There's been a bit of inflation in the last 30 years. Since when is a tooth worth $15?!"
My Dad started laughing then told me that Isaiah showed them the tooth and told them his Dad gave him $5 and Papaw told Isaiah that he wasn't about to be out done by Bill. So Papaw gave Isaiah $10. Then later my mom gave him $5. I'm not clear whether she knew he'd already been paid twice for it or not.
Anyway, it ended up being a $20 tooth!
I only remember getting coins for my teeth!
He may be a slow reader and writer, but I think he's aced Economics!

GYM

Isaiah had gym class yesterday and he asked me "mom, how are you at push ups?"
That is so sadly hillarious I just can't tell you!
I told him "Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha". I can't even do push up bras anymore. I'm beyond that!
He said he got out because "It's strike one, strike two, strike three, you're out". I guess they have to do push ups and that's what the gym teacher does when they can't complete one.
To that I answered "OOOHHHH hurt me!"
I mean seriously! What is the gym teacher thinking here? Isn't the kid that can't do it the one who needs to keep doing it?
Do you think if you told me to drop and give you 20, that when I tried 3 times and couldn't do it that it would at all make me feel bad that I had to quit. Not quite!
Hello! I am the kid who lost on purpose during high school badminton single elimination tournaments. Thankfully my best friend Julie was in my gym class and she was as much as a gym class underachiever as I was! I mean seriously! It's badminton! Do I want to keep playing or go sit on the bleachers with my best friend and chat for the next 5 weeks? HMMMMMM!
Looking back I was way too smart for my own good and was genius at getting out of doing things! Besides, who remembers who won that tournament anyhow?!

The Last Weekend

This is the last weekend before school starts and I am really hating it.
Even though Isaiah could stay in his room building Legos all day and only come down for lunch or to watch his sister, I'm going to miss him!
I hate sending him to school. I really really hate it!
I just remember the feeling of who will I sit with at lunch, who will I play with at recess. I just hate that. He thinks he'd love to be home schooled, but both of us could turn into hermits very quickly! He and I do not need a lot of interaction with the outside world.
He's spending his last weekend with his Grammy and Papaw. He's pretty much got free reign to go to their house any time it's available to him. Since Dad got sick I just really feel like he can go when ever he wants! He can spend as much time as possible with them.
You should see what all he takes. A rolling back pack with his clothes, a basket with a big stack of drawing paper and about 50 pens, an old diaper box with Legos and a big stackable plastic storage drawer full of more Legos. They're only like 10 miles away. Sometimes he even takes his PS2. Oh and the movies! He plans special weekends. Different themed weekends. Spiderman, Batman, Indiana Jones or Star Wars. Or Grammy's favorite Pirates of the Caribbean. She just loves Johnny Depp.
Oh well, I guess growing up is inevitable!
Summer just flew by! He's gonna be a 5th grader!

Shopping... not so bad

I took Isaiah to Kohls to get some Levi 550s because that's what fits him best. At first I couldn't find his size so I had him try on 3 other pairs. One fit but not great. I finally found his size in 550 and had him try a pair on and they fit! YIPPEE that'over!
Bill told us to look at shoes while we were there. So that was the last thing we did. Isaiah needs 8.5 in mens. I took him over showed him the different shoes. He tends to go for the tennis shoes that look more like hiking shoes. Anyway, he saw some he liked and I said "lets see if they have your size". So I'm looking and he said "How much are these mom?"
I looked at the little electronic tag and said "$59.99"
Isaiah said "Sixty dollars for a pair of shoes!? I am NOT spending that much on a pair of shoes. I was going to tell Dad I HAVE that pair of tennis shoes from Walmart that are fine. Why fix what ain't broke!", and he walked off.
So we didn't get shoes.
I did stop and pick up a pair of jeans for Bill. Isaiah asked why we were shopping for Dad. I told him I have to buy Bill's clothes because if I don't he'll want to wait until Levi's are $19.99 again, and that is not going to happen! I told him Daddy's a little lost in how much clothes cost because he never has to do the shopping, he still thinks stuff is at 1995 prices. Like in June when he wanted Nike tennis shoes, but didn't want to pay more than $30.
Oh well, I buy his clothes and make sure he doesn't buy some tapered leg jeans. He's lost in style too! :)

Back to School Shopping

Well I've gotten the school supplies.
Pencils, erasers, colored pencils, scissors, ruler, dry erase markers, red ball point pens, 5 folders all different colors with clips and pockets. This is the first year I haven't had to buy crayons or glue. Oh, I can't forget the paper towels or Kleenex, they actually specified Puff's or Kleenex.
Now we're on to clothes. I don't buy much at the beginning of the year but a day will come where he needs a pair of jeans that fit and I'd like to have at least one pair.
In case you don't know, it's Marvel comics 70th anniversary. I didn't know until a trip to Old Navy yesterday where Isaiah picked one t-shirt out of a very large selection. They also put a reprint of the original Spiderman comic in our bag.
Isaiah now has 3 t-shirts with marvel comics. We got 2 from Target but it wasn't until our trip to Old Navy that I knew something special was going on with Marvel. They kind of throw it in your face!
I hate buying jeans for him (and for me). I don't know who they make jeans for? Isaiah needs husky, but even they don't fit right. The really skinny kids have a hard time finding jeans too. So where are all the kids who actually fit into the jeans?
When I can just go to a store and buy his jeans by waist and length I will be soooooo happy! When he can go pick them up himself, I'll be even happier!

Good Boy

Isaiah still doesn't know there's anything wrong with my Dad, his Best Pal.
He stayed with my parents this weekend.
My Dad has been having a lot of lower back pain. He told Isaiah his back hurt and he was going to soak in a hot bath to try to get some relief.
Isaiah jumped to action! He ran the bath water and even ran around the house to find a George Jones CD that he thought his Papaw would enjoy listening to in the bath. Even set up the CD player and turned it on.
Last night Isaiah said to me "Did Papaw tell you he had the best bath ever today?"

A Decade has passed!

It's hard to believe a decade has passed since I had this big kid!

His shirt reads "Lost in Thought, Please send search party" and if you knew him you'd know how true that is! He's blowing out 10 candles on the Batman cake we got for him. He's into Batman, this week anyway. Until a new movie comes out he really enjoys!

See the way Naomi's looking at her Papaw in the first photo? That's how she looks at him all the time. That's the way he holds her, all the time. I don't think he knows she has feet. She loves him, as soon as he puts her down her arms reach right back up. Our dog is probably sitting on his feet. She adores him too. My mom, AKA "Grammie" is sitting to the right singing her heart out. She's not afraid to be silly or burst your ear drums with off key singing. She made Isaiah dance with her at a friends 60th birthday party a few years ago. He's still really scarred.

This is the one and only photo I took on our trip to Kalahari Resort in Sandusky Ohio. I know people take their camera's into the water park. But you know how it is when you have a toddler! I had enough crap to keep up with! I actually did take a few photos of Naomi doing nothing in the room.

Oh well. Happy Birthday to Isaiah who turned 10 on May 21, 2009. He's come a long way from the 10 lbs. 7 oz. baby boy I delivered! He still has the big head though!

Identity Crisis

Naomi keeps bringing me a ticket that comes with Thomas the Tank engine toys. It's one that we bought for Isaiah while on a family vacation in 2005 to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. That's what made me think of this story.
We were at a Christmas shop in Pigeon Forge and they had this big nativity scene. The figures were a good 3 feet tall or better. Well, Isaiah walked over to one, turned and yelled to me and Bill "Look!!! It's Obi Wan Kenobe!".
It was actually Joseph!

A Good Kid

Yesterday I was at speech therapy with Naomi and Bill ran over to pick Isaiah up from school.
Bill said some poor little girl came out and fell hard and was laying there crying. Funny enough I knew exactly who it was! I described a girl in Isaiah's grade and Bill said yes. I later confirmed with Isaiah that I was right.
This little girl is a little goofy. She's a sweet girl but she'll never be bratty and caddy like some of the others so she's different. She doesn't have designer clothes, but she does have moon boots! HA! I've seen her wear them and try to run and it's so funny! She also barks like a dog and acts like a dog in class a lot so she tends to stick out some. Isaiah has said she gets on his nerves with her constant "Pokemon" talk. She just doesn't understand he's not into Pokemon anymore. Oh the troubles of a 4th grader! But when Isaiah came out of school he noticed her laying there and stopped to ask if she was okay and if she needed help up. My son stopped. Countless other kids, even older kids walked over and around the poor girl, but my kid stopped to help this poor odd little girl who often gets on his nerves.
He's such a thoughtful young man!

Mind Like a Steel Trap

Today we were about 20 minutes from home at a little country store. When we got in the car to drive home I was in the driver's seat and Isaiah said "OH, good mom. It's not a good idea to let Dad drive is it? Remember what happened the last time he drove this car?"
Bill said "Isaiah let it go"
I said" I do remember Isaiah, when we were driving home from Carol's wedding, Daddy got pulled over by a West Virginia state trooper and he gave him a speeding ticket..... in 2005!"
He gets it honest!
At one of my cousin's weddings I accidentally locked the keys in my parents car after they sent me out for something. I wasn't even old enough to drive!
I was in my early 20's when on a trip to Cherokee, North Carolina with my mom I ran out of the Bingo Hall to get something out of my car. I'm almost to the car when I hear her yell "Don't lock the keys in the car!" She had come out to the parking lot to remind me for the millionth time to not lock the keys in the car. ME, her ADULT child, who lived 8 1/2 hours away from her and managed several times a day to exit my vehicle with keys in hand. I turned and yelled back "OH FOR PETE'S SAKE!!! Do you know how long ago that was? LET IT GO!!!" and I've never heard a thing about it again.
She does still grab my car's dashboard when riding as my passenger! I don't think I'll ever break her of that!

Isaiah and soccer

This morning Isaiah was talking to the kids I take to school and the topic of soccer came up. Isaiah said "I only played soccer one year but I was good. I just couldn't kick the ball in the goal". My sweet boy! He thinks he was good even though he couldn't do the whole object of the game! I'll tell you what he could do. He could run along the side lines waving at his family while the rest of the team chased the ball on the other side of the field!
He had a coach that made the kids run laps over and over. I'm sorry, it was there first time ever playing soccer, they know how to run! How about showing them the rules and whole idea of the game! They were 5 and 6 at the time.
I hate organized sports. If it's a good atmosphere that's one thing, but it generally isn't. There's always the coach who thinks he's preparing them for the big league and the parents who just want to WIN! Even when it's t-ball and no one's keeping score.
When I was young the boys started playing football in 7th grade. Now it starts in about 2nd grade. It just seems like their little bodies are not ready for all that yet. I have a friend who's son is very athletic and plays just about every sport he can. He had to have water removed from behind his knee before he was even 10 years old!
At least Isaiah was good in his memory. Anyone who witnessed his debut into soccer knows otherwise!

This week with Isaiah

It's been something every day with Isaiah this week.

Something was said at my parents house about the retirement home and my dad said
"Isaiah, I won't have to go to the retirement house will I? I can stay with you right?"
Isaiah said "There's just one problem with that Papaw, sometimes my Dad sleeps in bed with me."
My Dad laughed and told him "I won't be going anytime soon. You'll probably be married by the time I'm ready for the retirement home." My dad is only 59.

Then this week was my mother in law's birthday and Isaiah called to sing her happy birthday. She said "Do you know how old I am?" and Isaiah asked "Are you old enough for the retirement home?"

Every week in 4th grade they have fluency page they have to bring home and read every day. This week it was all about sayings that have come from the circus. Like "under the big top" and "grandstanding", "jumbo" and Isaiah's personal favorite "come rain or come shine". He has tried to slip this into conversation all week. Finally on Tuesday night my mom called and told him she'd be there to pick him up Wednesday after school. He replied "Will that be come rain or come shine Grammy?". Previously he'd been saying "fight the power"any time he could. Never in the proper context. For Example: He say "Mom, what are we having for dinner"
I'd answer "Pizza"
Then he says "Yeah! Fight the power!"

A few weeks ago Isaiah asked me about a girl at school who's teeth stuck out on the side. Having never seen her I just told him it was probably something she couldn't do anything about, just don't treat her any different and don't let that keep you from talking to her. Then he brought home his year book he pointed her out to me. It was worse than I imagined. It's obviously some sort of birth defect. The poor little girl was actually photographed side ways but you can see something is really wrong. Isaiah also said you can hear when she breathes and I told him it's probably just because she can't close her mouth completely. All his questions about her were out of concern. He wasn't ever being mean spirited. He's a very kind boy. I told him I'm sure there's a very sweet little girl inside there and you can't judge a person from the outside. The outside doesn't always show what a beautiful person is inside. Then I said "What do you think Jane looks like on the inside?" Jane is the name I'm giving a little girl in his grade that is extremely mean and seems set on hurting others feelings. Isaiah said he thinks on the inside she "Looks like a troll!"
I also then took pity on Jane and told him that little kids don't usually talk as mean as her.
Someone had to talk to her that way for her to learn it.
It's so hard to know what to tell kids!

On the lighter side!

Today in the car, Isaiah "tooted" and when he fessed up to it he said "I get that from Dad's side"!BOYS!

Isaiah's Social Studies flag

Isaiah was supposed to make a flag representing the northwest territories in his Social Studies class. I guess it's Ohio Social Studies because that's all they've studied so far. They're at the end of the 1700's now in Ohio history and Ohio is one of the 5 states to come from the northwest territories. What's so funny is the paragraph Isaiah wrote along with the flag and the response from the teacher. Isaiah wrote....
The buckeye (which is not a meatball) stands for Ohio. The stars stands for the five states the green stand for the farm lands. The read stands for the blood they shed in battle.
(he's an excellent speller I can't believe he wrote "read" instead of red.)
His teacher wrote
90% A-
Isaiah
-nice job!
-Good paragraph but should be 5 sentences!
-That's funny about the meatball!
His teachers have to get a kick out of him. He always tries to write something to make them laugh. In the 3rd grade they had to write spelling sentences every week. After the first comment written by his teacher on his sentences page, he was hooked! He tried to make her laugh and write a comment every week after that! At one point I had to tell him "they can be funny but they HAVE to make sense also!".

The Papaw Poem

Isaiah brought this home from school yesterday. I can't remember what they call this type of poem, but he chose to write about his Papaw (who else!?) They are tight! Best Pal is what they call each other. Here's how his poem goes.
Papaw
Loving, peaceful
Fishing, joking, caring
I love my Papaw
Grandpa

He drew a picture of Papaw in his house, see the recliner off to the left. He even drew in the lever that puts your legs up!

The Holy Lands of Maryland

My son stayed with my parents this weekend. Sunday morning my mom called and told Bill they were watching television and something came on that mentioned Baltimore and Isaiah had a "light bulb" moment and said - "Baltimore? That's where Jesus was born"
Baltimore/Bethlehem, it is MARYland.
At least he's off his Adam and his wife Eve kick. He searched for them in the cemetery where my grandparents are buried. I thought he was just looking for other family tombstones. After we left he said "I don't understand. If they were the first humans who worked at the hospitals when they had kids?!"
It's funny the way he gets things turned around!

Everyday Math, Everyday Smath!

If your child's school ever decides to introduce the Everyday Math curriculum.... PROTEST!
Seriously it is the craziest thing I've ever seen! If your child is great at math, they may enjoy it. I mean what could be better than 90 minutes of math to a K-6 grader!
My son is in the 4th grade. They switch classes and he has one teacher for Math and Science. He is in her class 90 minutes. She HAS to teach Math 90 minutes. So when does Science get taught? It doesn't. He is 1/2 way through the 4th grade and has had 3 graded papers in Science. The 2nd 9 weeks he had absolutely NO Science. He bought home his grade card and I noticed there wasn't a Science grade so I emailed his teacher. She called me back and told me she wasn't happy about it, but 4th grader's are not state tested on Science but they are on Math so she had to make a choice and she had to let Science slide the last 9 weeks. Again she HAS to teach 90 minutes of math. The thing is the kids are in math 90 minutes and STILL don't understand! This is not a teaching problem it's a curriculum problem. The teachers voted AGAINST this curriculum but the administration or who ever, made the decision to get the curriculum in our schools. (WHY EVEN ASK THE TEACHER'S OPINION?)
Can you imagine the poor Kindergarten or 1st grade teachers trying to keep those little kids attention on math for 90 minutes a day!
Here's an example of why I HATE this curriculum.
Monday they may teach subtraction this way
356 First subtract the 100's
-173Then Subtract the 10's you can't subtract 5 from 7, Oh yes you can just write it as a minus
____Then subtract the ones and since it is doable you write it as +
+ 200
- 20
+ 3
_____
183

But today is a new day! It's Tuesday now do the same problem but use the old cross out and borrow way to do subtraction!

Wait, another day is gone, now it's Wednesday, I went to their website and copied this because I can not even explain it!

Closest to the traditional standard is a method that Everyday Mathematics calls "trade first". It is the Everyday Math focus algorithm for subtraction. It is a two stage process, first working right to left to do all the borrowing (recording the intermediate results above the top number) and then a second pass, in any order, doing the subtractions. The intermediate results are two-digit numbers, so one needs to use wide columns, and it is recommended to separate the columns with clear vertical lines. In the example at right, 325 - 58, we first recognize that the ones column needs borrowing, so we replace 2*10+5 by 1*10+15. Then we recognize that the tens column also needs borrowing, so we replace 3*100+1*10 by 2*100+11*10. Then we do the subtraction in each column.
211
115
3 2 5
- 5 8
------
2 6 7

I can't even keep the methods straight!
And that's not even all!!
There's also the same change
so
356 363
-173 -180
____ Make the bottom number end in 0 so add 7 to top and bottom_______

Not only are they shown these methods. I can see showing them the methods and letting them choose what is easier for them. No, they have to master ALL the methods! Also, they are all taught in the same week!
You've seriously got to check out the lattice method of multiplication! There are also 4 methods of multiplication taught too!
What's wrong with the old fashioned way of just practice, practice, practice!
Another thing is the younger grades get lots of homework like "find things in your home that show"_____ whatever. Busy work. I hate stuff like that, clipping out of magazines and all! YUK!
I'm posting (complaining) about this today because I've talked to the Principal and he's not happy with the curriculum either. I told him if Isaiah fails the 4th grade math state testing this year he is NOT going to summer school because it's the curriculum that has failed him. He's not spending 90 minutes a day plus 6 weeks of his summer in math because someone chose a crappy curriculum. They send them to summer school and they re-test on the subject that way if they pass the school system looks better. Well no way! The school system is going to look exactly as it should, failing!

I work with him all summer and had him doing multiplication the old fashioned way then they show him 3 other ways and mess him all up. Nope sorry! I'll keep working with him. Eventually he'll age out of this crappy curriculum!
